Our Dentists

Chris Holdaway grew up in and around Provo, Utah graduating from Spanish Fork High School and going on to achieve a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Brigham Young University. He became a Registered Nurse and worked in the Med-Surg unit at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and maintained his license until the completion of dental school. He later obtained a Master’s in Business Administration degree from Arizona State University.

After completing a year of requirements at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, he finally finished his education with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill.) Following graduation, Dr. Holdaway worked for a busy practice in Asheville before coming to High Point and purchasing Dr. Upchurch’s practice. He has really enjoyed living in High Point and working with our wonderful patients.

Dr. Holdaway is an Eagle Scout and served a 2-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He and his wife (who also graduated from UNC) have four children. They reside in Colfax, NC. Dr. Holdaway loves sports, hiking, camping and being active. He also enjoys movies, books, games and crosswords.

Dr. Upchurch was born in Durham, North Carolina and lived in Fayetteville and Salisbury until moving to High Point in 1954. He attended junior and senior high school in High Point, graduating from High Point Senior High in 1959. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergraduate study. He then attended the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry graduating in 1966.
Dr. Upchurch joined the US Army Reserves 1964 and served on active duty as a captain in the Army Dental Corp at Fort Larson in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1966-67. He then was stationed in Korat, Thailand from 1967-68. He returned to High Point and opened his private dental practice on July 1, 1968 on Lindsay St, moving to a bigger office up the same street in 1977. He shared the new building with Dr. Michael D. Samuel.
Dr. and Mrs. Upchurch (the former Ann Young) have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Dr. Upchurch enjoys a variety of music having played both the piano and clarinet. He was involved in the early growth of the High Point Soccer Association, haven served as President for one year and was involved in having the US National Team play twice at Simon Stadium in High Point. He attends Emerywood Baptist Church in High Point and was the Chairman of the Diaconate for 2009-2010.
As much as ever he enjoys seeing his patients and continuing his education.

Dr. Joel Manchego

Dr. Joel is a native of Lima, Peru. At 13 years of age, he and his family moved to Winston-Salem in North Carolina where he resumed his primary and secondary education. He is an alumnus of North Carolina State University with a bachelor degree in Biology and Chemistry. After undergraduate school, he worked int the pharmaceutical industry for three years before attending Marquette University to pursue his career goal of becoming a dentist. While studying at Marquette, Dr. Joel continued his passion for community service at the local, national and international la levels. In 2010 and 2011, he had the privilege to visit remote areas in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and provide basic dental services to the people. Dr. Joel is co-responsible for the development and establishment of a nationwide program that allow dental students from different schools to engage in community service together. 

Dr. Joel graduated from Marquette in 2012 and has been practicing general dentistry in North Carolina since. He enjoys all aspects of dentistry and has a strong interest in endodontics. Dr. Joel attends renowned dental conferences yearly to provide the best dental care possible.
